FOCN45 CWWG 051930 SIGNIFICANT WEATHER DISCUSSION ISSUED BY THE PRAIRIE AND ARCTIC STORM PREDICTION CENTRE OF ENVIRONMENT CANADA AT 2:00 PM CST TUESDAY NOVEMBER 5 2024. ALERTS IN EFFECT...SNOWFALL WARNINGS FOR THE CYPRESS HILLS AREA. SNOWFALL WARNING FOR KINNGAIT. SYNOPTIC OVERVIEW...ALOFT, AN UPPER RIDGE IS OVER THE EASTERN PACIFIC AND STRETCHES NORTHWARD THROUGH ALASKA. A SHORTWAVE IS OVER MONTANA AND WEAK RIDGING OVER SASKATCHEWAN. AN UPPER LOW IS OVER EXTREME NORTHERN MANITOBA WITH A TROUGH SOUTHWARD. A SHORTWAVE IS OVER EASTERN HUDSON BAY. AN UPPER LOW IS OVER BAFFIN BAY. AT THE SURFACE, A 998 MB LOW IS OVER SOUTHWESTERN SASKATCHEWAN. AN OCCLUDED 989 MB LOW IS OVER CENTRAL HUDSON BAY. A RIDGE IS OVER EASTERN CANADA AND STRETCHES NORTHWARD THROUGH BAFFIN ISLAND. DISCUSSION... AB...THE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM CURRENTLY OVER SOUTHWESTERN SASKATCHEWAN IS BRINGING LIGHT SNOW TO SOUTHERN ALBERTA. SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS HAVE BEEN LESS THAN EXPECTED, MAINLY IN THE 0-2 CM RANGE. HOWEVER, STRONG NORTHERLY FLOW OVER THE CYPRESS HILLS WILL ENHANCE SNOWFALL RATES, AND 10-15 CM IS EXPECTED IN SOUTHEASTERN ALBERTA SOUTH OF THE TRANS-CANADA HIGHWAY. LOCALIZED AMOUNTS OF UP TO 25 CM ARE POSSIBLE ON THE NORTH-FACING SLOPES OF THE CYPRESS HILLS BY THE TIME SNOWFALL ENDS LATE TUESDAY NIGHT. ADDITIONALLY, VISIBILITY WILL BE REDUCED IN BLOWING SNOW, PARTICULARLY DOWNSLOPE OF THE CYPRESS HILLS NEAR THE US BORDER WHERE GUSTS OF 70 KM/H ARE POSSIBLE. A WEAK UPPER TROUGH IS EXPECTED TO PASS THROUGH THE PEACE COUNTRY AND NORTHERN FOOTILLS EARLY TOMORROW MORNING. A BRIEF LINE OF FLURRIES IS EXPECTED TO PASS THROUGH THE PEACE COUNTRY AND SOME SHOWERS WITH A RISK OF FREEZING RAIN WILL PASS THROUGH THE NORTHERN FOOTHILLS. SK/MB...THE LOW OVER SOUTHWESTERN SASKATCHEWAN WILL CONTINUE TO TRACK SOUTHEAST TODAY BRINGING SNOWFALL TO SOUTHWESTERN SASKATCHEWAN THIS MORNING AND CONTINUING INTO THE EVENING. THE HIGHEST ACCUMULATIONS (ABOUT 15 CM BY TUESDAY EVENING) ARE EXPECTED OVER THE CYPRESS HILLS IN UPSLOPE NORTHERLY FLOW. WINDS GUSTING UP TO 70 KM/H WILL GIVE POOR VISIBILITY IN FALLING SNOW/BLOWING SNOW. REMAINDER OF AFFECTED AREA WILL SEE GENERAL AMOUNTS IN THE 2-5 CM RANGE. THE LOW WILL MOVE INTO MONTANA THIS EVENING AND BRING SOME SNOW TO SOUTHEASTERN SASKATCHEWAN THIS EVENING, BUT NO NOTABLE ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED. CONDITIONS WILL IMPROVE OVERNIGHT INTO WEDNESDAY MORNING. NWT...A BAND OF LIGHT SNOW WILL PASS THROUGH THE NWT AND WESTERN NUNAVUT TOMORROW, MAINLY EAST OF THE MACKENZIE VALLEY. THERE COULD BE SOME FREEZING DRIZLE TOMORROW MORNING NEAR GREAT SLAVE LAKE, BUT IT IS CURRENTLY TOO DIFFICULT TO ASSESS AT THIS TIME. KITIKMEOT AND HIGH ARCIC...WIDESPREAD STRATOCUMULUS WITH A CHANCE OF FLURRIES - OTHERWISE NIL SIG WX. KIVALLIQ...STRONG NORTHERLY FLOW ON THE BACKSIDE OF THE HUDSON BAY LOW WILL IMPACT KIVALLIQ, TODAY, WITH GUSTY NORTHERLY WINDS AND RESULTING REDUCED VISIBILITIES IN SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW. AS THE LOW TRACKS TOWARDS DAVIS STRAIT AND WEAKENS, THE GRADIENT WILL SLACKEN AND WINDS WILL SUBSIDE BY WEDNESDAY MORNING. MILD TEMPERATURES IN THE REGION WILL LIMIT BLIZZARD POTENTIAL. IN CORAL HARBOUR, DOWNSLOPE ENHANCEMENT WINDS WITH GUSTS OF 70 TO 80 KM/H ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP THIS MORNING. BAFFIN...THE HUDSON BAY LOW WILL SPREAD SNOW INTO SOUTHERN BAFFIN, TODAY. AMOUNTS WILL BE IN THE 2 TO 5 CM RANGE FOR MOST COMMUNITIES, SAVE FOR KINNGAIT WHERE NORTHEASTERLY ONSHORE FLOW WILL RESULT IN ENHANCED SNOWFALL OVER THE COMMUNITY, WITH 10-15 CM EXPECTED BY TUESDAY EVENING.
